Bringing our relational expertise to local partners

Our Head of Strategic Partnerships and Programmes, Sarah Ingram, explains how we apply our expertise in relationships to work with local authorities, family hubs and charities to support more parents and families across the country.

Relational practice and theory are at the core of the Tavistock Relationships approach. We train the next generation of couple therapists, run clinical services for parents and couples, and conduct research and evaluation. Our portfolio of development offerings includes professional therapist trainings accredited by BACP and the British Psychoanalytic Council, and one conviction runs through all our trainings and projects which is that the quality of the relationship between parents shapes what happens for their children.

The Tavistock Relationships clinicians who deliver and supervise work at a local level are the same people who train therapists and see couples and individuals in the consulting room. Parents seeking help with their own relationship can also approach TR directly, through the counselling and therapy services at tavistockrelationships.org, on a sliding fee scale.

We partner with local authority, family hubs and charity partners in several ways. Some areas might commission us for a single half-day workshop to build frontline confidence, while others commission our digital tools like Between Us. Local authorities might ask us to train their staff in a manualised intervention such as MBT-PP or Parents as Partners, and for this we can provide ongoing weekly clinical supervision until practitioners are certified, then have senior colleagues trained as accredited supervisors so the model is held locally.

Often our relationships begin with a single project and then develop into a multi-year partnership blending training, supervision and consultancy. Current partners include Ealing, Westminster, Camden, Barnet, Oxfordshire, Bristol, South Gloucestershire and Bury.
